Within this week, my Boss delegates me on behalf of the company for an open negotiation of a new project with a very important client form another State. Representing my company for some meetings of conferences are quite familiar for me; however, a negotiation is truly something different. I even still have no idea what to do next after standard greeting and what I am supposed to do at the time of negotiation. This delegation is actually another big and important Company prestige and turnover. I wonder why my boss asks me to do so. He just simply tells me that I am supposed to learn about this. All related materials, files and data for the negotiation are already at my hands. It is then up to me what action I will take. Right! The action is apparently now the problem; what am I supposed to do then?
Once getting online on the internet at my desk, I am trying to find some sites that probably could assist me with the so-called ‘negotiation’. And for my surprise, there are lots of information and guidance of a single word ‘negotiation’ on the net that are quite enough for me to refer to. Viewing one, I put my focus on some points in an argument to prepare such as Opening Bid, Target Point, Resistance Point and some others. These are the very beginning thing considered as a plan I have to take that I didn’t know about previously. By defining the points above in the planning stage, I will proactively be setting targets for the negotiation. It is considerably called a strategy. Wow! I am preparing a strategy for a negotiation now.
There will be a lot to talk, discuss and negotiate by the time of the meeting. I must really not look so rigid on my performance. Therefore, instead of only focusing on the negotiation, or figuring out what the client strategy will be, I must be actively talking more about realistic, optimistic, and pessimistic outcomes – apparently, talking about condition, family or other interests will not work well. By presenting our idea of outcomes, I will have more chance to be more flexible in the negotiation and will surely make things easier to end up in a satisfactory negotiation for us both.
